About me
I am the Grumpy DBA, better known as Jay Caviness, Oracle DBA for the past…oh 19 years…geez, I really am old! I am the senior systems engineering Oracle DBA for McKesson Provider Technologies specializing in RAC, ASM and architecture for clinical systems in use nationwide. I get to work (play?) with all kinds of bleeding edge technologies across four platforms to find the best HA solutions for our clients.
I have had a 19 year career with Oracle, starting out as an Ada and X-Windows/Motif programmer for GTE back in the day. While I used Pro*Ada to connect to Oracle 5.1, I didn’t know much about administration. Until that fateful day that our DBA decided to leave and I overheard my boss say “We’ll get Jay to do it”, after the panic had subsided and time, patience and a lot of on the fly learning passed, I realized that I had quite a knack for solving Oracle problems. I have had a terrific career working and consulting for the likes of Oracle, Pepsi, Wells Fargo, Sun and McKesson. I am a generallist physical DBA who would rather troubleshoot a down RAC node than tune a SQL query any day. ASM and RAC are my two favorite pieces of Oracle 10g & 11g and I have become quite the evangelist for both on Linux, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Windows. It isn’t always easy, but it is almost always fun solving the problem.

Hi Jay,
I am Nirmal and working as an Oracle DBA since last 3 years in Australian govt on single instance db.
I really liked your website and spending almost 2 hours everyday on reading and testing from documents.
Nice to know that you love working on RAC, it’s my favorite area but still haven’t got chance to dirty my hands.
Any suggestion for beginner like me to get into RAC job market?
Thanks,
Nirms
